Swear words have been prevalent in many parts of our society for some time but in the past, people may have tempered the language they use outside of work when speaking with colleagues.
It seems, however, that stance is changing.
Research by New Zealand’s Broadcasting Standards Authority shows TV and radio audiences have a decreasing tolerance for racial and cultural insults, but attitudes towards blasphemy and terms using the F-word are softening
Overseas, A UK employment court recently ruled that it is okay to swear at work, with the judge saying swear words “no longer have the ‘shock value’ they once did.”
So how does swearing fit with a culture of inclusion and belonging? Given the diversity of age, culture and religion in our workplaces, could it still be seen as disrespectful to use swear words in our professional lives? Or is it simply freedom of expression that, for some people, is part of bringing their whole selves to work.
